  OHSE - Choose Ohio First Scholarship (COFS) Program

About the program

The OHSE Choose Ohio First Scholarship (COFS) program is a collaboration among the five campuses of The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati, and Muskingum College. OSU has established the OHSE to administer the program. OSU-Columbus and UC will build on long-standing NSF-funded GK-12 projects to provide effective delivery of inquiry-based science lessons in K-12 classrooms using COFS recipients. OSU-Columbus will recruit and retain new STEM majors. These scholarship recipients will be trained to become leaders and peer mentors in STEM outreach programs of the OHSE. Muskingum College, already an active partner with the Wonders of Our World (W.O.W.) program that forms a cornerstone of OHSE, will enhance their STEM enrollment through similar activities. All the programs offered through OHSE will use COFS recipients and volunteers from local industries such as Battelle and Chemical Abstracts to feed back their enthusiasm and excitement about their career choices to a younger generation of potential STEM majors. Finally, a new STEM education curriculum at OSU-Columbus along with revitalized curricula at the regional campuses of OSU and Muskingum College will provide COFS recipients with new or more affordable paths towards licensure for middle school and high school STEM teaching.

  Future Scientists of Ohio - Choose Ohio First Scholarship (COFS) Program

About the program

The Choose Ohio First Scholarships are funded by the State of Ohio with the objective of increasing the number of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) graduates and retaining them in jobs within the state. These scholarships will be used to recruit and support STEM or STEM-education students at OSU.

The Future Scientists of Ohio Scholarship Program is particularly designed to encourage community college students to transfer to OSU to complete their four year STEM degree.

FSO-Choose Ohio First Scholarships will be available to assist in funding tuition, fees and room and board. The FSO-COF scholarship recipients will be expected to participate in mentoring activities and undergraduate research opportunities designed to assist in integrating into OSU as well as science outreach activities within the OHSE.

Goals:

  •   Provide bridge courses and experiences to facilitate the transition of community college students to Ohio State University;
  •   Reinvent first year and second year science courses to provide enhanced learning and increase retention in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) majors;
  •   Provide scholarship funding for transfer STEM majors.
